TRAVELING WITH YOUR BIKE

TRAIN: Via Rail (the passenger service in Canada) charges $15 (one way) to transport a bike as checked baggage on any route that has baggage car service. That fee includes provision of a heavy cardboard box to carry the bike, which must have pedals removed and handlebars turned to fit in the box. On some routes lacking baggage car service they will arrange to have the bike forwarded by courier to your destination address.

AIRLINES:Air Canada charges $65 each way between points in Canada and the U.S.A., including provision of a bike bag which becomes your property. For travel from outside Canada and the U.S.A., charges will vary according to the departure point.

BUS LINES:Some Canadian bus lines will charge a parcel rate, which varies by distance and you will have to provide your own box or bag. Sample charges: Quebec City to Ottawa: $35. Vancouver to Victoria:$10.70.  Greyhound Canada charges $10 for a bike box and the bike can travel as one of your two pieces of checked luggage at no extra charge. Additional pieces of luggage are $5 each on Greyhound.
